Essential Oils for Hair Care and Growth

Everyone is familiar with Rapunzel’s fairy tale story, yes! the beautiful princess with very long and healthy hairs. Hairs are always included as the best feature in the description of beauty. A poet still expresses the beauty of a lady by describing her soft silky, long, and shiny hairs. But these days, due to the troubled and stressful life, pollution, improper diet, and lack of sufficient time for personal care have created numerous hair problems. Youngsters and even children face hair loss, itchy scalp, dry and thin hairs, dandruff, and many other issues. Once you get trapped with any such problem means you will be spending thousands of bucks as bills of medication and dermatologist or trichologists fee. It is better to get aware of a step before and start taking due care of your valuable hairs. 

When it comes to hair care for years, oil massage is always considered as secrete of envy-worthy-hair. In India, hot oil massage is a succession process given by the grandmothers through their grandmothers and reached till the newest generation. How much modern we turn out, but when it comes to healthy skin or hair care, we still try traditional and proven homely methods and medications rather than just seeing a doctor with immediate effect. One such traditionally used component for hair care is an essential oil. 

Essential oils are not a new component in hair care products; they are in trend for eras. Ancient stories and mythology give evidence of the usage of essential oils for health, skin, and hair benefits. But when we analyze the broad range of essential oils, it doesn’t seem easy to find the one that is best suited as per our requirements. Of course, it isn’t apparent because there are a wide variety of essential oils in the market that can claim their hair advantages. But one must perform a complete research work for the benefits of essential oils before using them. 

Best essential oils for hair care and their usage

Rosemary essential oil – This essential oil is known for its versatile nature. It finds its place in the kitchen, bathroom, or at the dressing table. Clinical reviews have shown that scalp massage with few drops of rosemary essential oil mixed with carrier oil helps protect against hair loss and enhance the volume of the hairs. It repairs, regulates, and stimulates the cells and reduces the oil discharge at hair follicles. Thus it is beneficial for the oily and sticky scalp. 

Usage:  Blend ten drops of essential oil in 2 tablespoons of coconut oil or olive oil and apply it to your scalp. Leave it for half an hour and then shampoo your hairs. 

Tea Tree Oil – Tea tree oil is a common element of cosmetics and personal care products. It is well-known for its cleansing and anti-bacterial properties. It contributes the hair growth by opening clogged hair follicles.

Usage: The best way to use tea tree oil for hair care is by adding a few drops of it into the shampoo and gently applying it over the scalp. Another method is to apply directly over the hairs along with carrier oil. 

Geranium essential oil – Geranium essential oil is an active agent for hair growth. It is one of the best oil that makes the scalp healthy and ultimately enhances hair growth. It can reduce the dryness, regulate the excess fat, and bring the complete balance. 

Usage:  Mix one drop of geranium essential oil into the shampoo and apply it all over the scalp. Rinse with normal water. Repeat the process twice a week. 

Cedarwood essential oil – This essential oil is blessed with a sweet woody aroma. This oil is eminent hair tonic and is in use since ancient times for treating thin hairs and alopecia. This oil shows excellent result to cure dandruff, itchy scalp, and fungal infections. 

Usage:  Mix 3 drops of cedarwood oil with two tablespoons of coconut oil and give a gentle massage to the scalp with this blend, you can also add two drops of lavender essential oil to get relaxing and soothing aroma. Please keep it for an hour and then wash with your favourite shampoo. 

Ylang Ylang essential oil – It is a native tree of the Philippines, and its essential oil is prominently known for its quality to moisturize the scalp. It possesses potent to promote hair growth, prevents hair loss and thinning of hairs, repairs the damaged strands, and improves the hair’s texture. 

Usage: Add 4-5 drops of ylang-ylang essential oil to two tablespoons of olive oil and massage gently, cover your head with a warm towel, leave it for 1-2 hours, and rinse with shampoo and lukewarm water. 

The risk associated with essential oils 

  • Using any of the essential oil in large quantities can create headaches and nausea. They are highly concentrated and strong extracts of the herbs and hence must use in a limited number. 
  • It is better to consult a doctor or aroma therapist to confirm the essential oil’s suitability over your scalp. 
  • Check all your allergies and ensure that the use of any essential oil may not create any health issues related to the existing allergies. 
  • It is highly recommended for pregnant women to use essential oil in a very minute unit that, too, with the consent of a doctor.
